What is needlepoint?

Needlepointing is more than just a hobby, it is a lifestyle! Just kidding, needlepoint is a type of hand embroidery stitched over a stiff, open-weave canvas rather than directly onto plain fabric. You can use many different threads and stitches to create a beautiful piece of art.

What do I need to get started?

A canvas, preferably one of mine, some thread, needles and a lot of patience! Some people use stretcher bars to hold the canvases taut, while others like to just free hand it. I personally do not like stretcher bars, I will just block it before I am ready to get it finished.

How do I choose a canvas?

I know it can feel daunting with how many types of canvases there are, but start with something small! Do not feel pressured to take on the biggest canvas to feel like you’ve “made it”. Pick a design that speaks to you but also with the intention of how you want to finish it. Start with what feels right to you, and go from there.

What's the difference between 13 and 18 mesh?

In this case, “size does matter”. 13 Mesh consists of 13 “crosses” per inch. This means that the holes are a bit bigger and you can use a thicker thread and these tend to be easier, can be completed faster, and are easier to see. 18 Mesh has 18 “crosses” per inch. 18 mesh canvases are more detailed and can be conisdered a bit advanced.

What’s the difference between painted and printed canvases?

Painted and printed are just two different mediums. Painted canvases are usually made with acrylic paint and are hand painted. These canvases can have variation in the color and will always have a bit of variety. Printed canvases are done with a printer. The canvases are put either in a printer or printed on, TBH I don’t know because all my canvases are hand painted!
